Literature Text

              “A water dragon?”

Arlong is really confused. Also he’s beyond pissed that a human is keeping him pinned to the ground. You meanwhile are thoroughly enjoying yourself. It was barely taking any of your strength to hold the fishman beneath you down, and it amused you the growing anger behind his eyes.

              “I didn’t stutter did I?” you ask.

Arlong growls and looks over to his men again, who still haven’t moved. That is another reason for his growing anger. His men should have come to his aid by now and dealt with this crazy-ass human. You see this and laugh,

“Don’t expect your men to help you. Even though they have not seen my natural form they did see me throw you from the water like a beach ball. They may be loyal to you but they also want to keep their lives.”

Then you suddenly grow bored. The forearm you have raised and your teeth become human again and you push yourself off of Arlong like one would a fluffy mattress. You walk over to where you left your empty bento box and a bag. The bento box goes in the bag and the bag goes over your shoulder.

“Well it was very nice to meet you Arlong but I’m afraid I must be going, this beach has become too crowded for my liking.”

You saunter off down the sand and Arlong watches you, still on his back, until you disappear.

Once you are gone he jumps up and proceeds to beat the living crap out of his men then stomps back to Arlong Park.

Since that day every time you went to the beach you secretly hoped that Arlong would be there. You couldn’t really explain it but the leader of the fishmen made your day interesting. You hadn’t returned to that stretch of beach since the incident, figuring it best not to poke too much fun at the men who were still capable of destroying your village. It actually surprised you that none of Arlong’s men came to your village after what happened. You half expected a small group of them to show up and level everything.

Back on the beach you lay as you had done that day, stretched out and your body aching to be closer to the water. You’d been there all morning and so far you’d had no guests. Another thing you hadn’t done since that day was take your natural form. Over the past five years you hadn’t taken your natural form but twice. The people in your village knew what you really were, hence them not liking you, but they didn’t hate you enough to kick you out.

It honestly felt amazing taking the form you were meant to be in after so many years. Being back in human form made you feel like you were living in a leathery bag. You didn’t hold anything against humans, except you didn’t really care for their fishing nets, but you missed being a dragon.

Lost in thought you didn’t notice company walking up the shoreline.

Arlong was alone this time, mostly to protect himself from the embarrassment of getting whooped in front of his men again. He figured you’d be back on the stretch of beach and actually felt a tinge of happiness when he saw you stretched out on the sand. Since that day you’d been on the mind of the leader of the fishmen constantly. Arlong only caught a glimpse of your natural form, he wanted to see it again. Another thing that had the fishman wanting to see you was your attitude. You really didn’t have any respect for his authority, although now he kind of knew why. But the whole not having people afraid of and respecting you was a new thing.

Having fallen asleep again you didn’t notice Arlong approach you. Instead of standing over you the fishman sits next to you on the sand and looks out on the ocean. He sits there for quite a while, content with watching the ocean and waiting for you to wake up. However you were quite enjoying your dream so you wouldn’t be waking up for some time. After more time has passed Arlong turns his attention from the water to you.

Your (h/c) hair was tied in a ponytail behind your head, you wore a dark blue tank top and black shorts, your sandals were sitting next to your bento box on the sand and even though they were closed Arlong could still see your striking sky blue eyes. A part of him didn’t want you to wake up, partially because he didn’t want to run the risk of getting beaten again. Eventually though Arlong felt sleep pulling at his eyelids and he lays down next to you and is asleep quickly.

“Wake up Mr. Sleepy Fish.” A voice coos.

Arlong cracks open an eye and tilts his head to see you leaning back in the sand next to him. There is a faint smile on your face and he can tell you’re suppressing laughter. He sits up and looks up at the sky, he’d been asleep a lot longer than he’d planned. Looking back over to you he meets your sky blue eyes and surprisingly he doesn’t really care.

“Did you enjoy your nap?” you ask.

It felt strange, but Arlong felt comfortable around you.

“I was going to ask you the same thing when you woke up,” he replies.

You scoot closer to Arlong, raise yourself off the ground a bit and place the back of your hand on his forehead,

“Are you feeling alright?” you ask.

Arlong flinches slightly at the physical contact but he soon relaxes, your skin is much softer than he thought it would be. After a moment he removes your hand from his forehead,

              “I’m fine.”

You fold your hands in your lap and tilt your head,

“Are you sure? I don’t sense any snarkyness.”

Arlong grunts and looks back at the ocean. You shrug your shoulders and reach for your bento box, your stomach saying it’s time to eat. Today all you’d packed was rice balls, seeing as that’s all you had left in your pantry. As you munched on your rice balls your eyes follow Arlong’s to the ocean. Damn how you wanted to just dive right in and never come out. Arlong briefly glances at you and when he sees the look in your eyes he smirks. You catch this, meet his gaze, and frown.

“You want to get back in the water don’t you?” Arlong asks.

You finish your lunch and stick your bento box back in your bag,

              “So what if I do?”

              “Why don’t you?”

“Won’t a certain fishman get angry with me?”

“I thought you didn’t have any respect for authority.”

You stick out your tongue but don’t say anything. Arlong chuckles and stands up and offers you his webbed hand. You stare at it questionable and look back up at him.

“I won’t get angry with you,” he says, “I want to see your natural form again.”

Your face instantly brightens up and you dash for the water, not even caring if Arlong is trying to trick you or not. Arlong waits a few minutes after you disappear below the surface to follow you in the water. He swims out and isn’t surprised when he doesn’t see you for a few minutes. After a while movement on his left side catches his attention and he turns his head, he almost loses his breath.

You are in your water dragon form, swimming lazily towards Arlong, with a fin sticking out from the corner of your jaw. Once you reach him you swallow the fin and stare into Arlong’s eyes,

              “Like what you see?”

Arlong is speechless and his mind is scrambling for words. After a few silent moments he can only think of one word,

              “Incredible.”

You chuckle, “This coming from a member of the species that sees themselves as superior.”

“What species could possibly be superior to you?” Arlong asks.

You chuckle again, Arlong is definitely acting different… and you actually like it. For the rest of the evening the two of you swim lazily through the water until the light starts to fade and you should be heading back. Arlong watches from beneath the waves as you leave the water and your body slowly morphs back into human form. He follows shortly after and he finds you throwing your bag over your shoulder and staring off to the horizon.

“I think it’s time I leave this place,” you say.

              “What?” Arlong asks.

You ignore his question and walk up to him. You give Arlong a hug, catching him by surprise.

“Thanks for today Arlong,” you whisper, “But it’s time I leave and find a more suitable home.”

Arlong, still in shock, manages to return your hug with putting one of his arms around you. The two of you stand there for a few moments before you detach yourself from Arlong and look deeply into his eyes.

“I like you Arlong, so I’m going to give you some advice,” you say, “I’ve been alive for a long time, and I’ve learned a lot about humans. And one thing I’ve learned is that they don’t take subjugation well. You may have control over the villages now but… one day you will be taken down.”

Without waiting for a response you walk down the beach towards your village. As he watches you walk away Arlong feels like he will never see you again.

I only plan on going up to 3 parts with this but depending on how part 3 goes there may be part 4. This series is not going to be very long.
